Bright and Sunny Day
By: Eleanor McCalla

In the morning there is hopefulness,
a bright and shining new day.
Then all the pain and dolefulness
wipe happiness away.

Take a deep breath in--
The sunshine, it is bright.
The sun, however, burns our skin,
its fire a blinding sight.

The birds, their chirping rings
throughout the bright blue sky.
The chirping, however, brings
headaches, amplified.

The sky is bright and blue,
a mild and clear sapphire
full of pollution and toxins too,
the smell of trash on fire.

To look at the glass half full
is a flawed deliberation,
for, on a sunny day so blissful,
you've forgotten evaporation

"Most of the stanzas begin with a positive phrase--an image of a blissful spring afternoon. The 'dark side' shows as the stanzas progress, taking the positive images of a happy day, and bringing to light their flaws." --Eleanor McCalla from Atlantic High School
