Life - Shouzheng Chen

Hot Dish Challenge
Been told life must have a purpose, sooner than later,
but if death is the destination, why even bother?
Getting up just to fall one more time,
grasping the light in reach, merely so
darkness consumes it faster. No matter
how far one can go,
the road ends. Time,
like a clock,
tick, tock,
da.

"The word 'Da' at the end of the poem was purely intended to be a sound. The word itself doesn't have a significant meaning besides it resembles the sound of a clock ticking . . . and since the allusion to the clock was being used, enhancing the atmosphere that life is in vain by introducing the consistency and cold cruelty of time seemed a good ending to me at the time." - Shouzheng Chen, 11th grade, Regina High School.
