Randy - Anna Martin
He came into the world the oldest of four,
his siblings listened to him with rapture, and even though his family was poor he made his life into an adventure. This sly man pulled off numerous capers: He snuck out of art class through a window, and wrote his name on smart students’ papers as they were being turned in up the row. He served as an army cook just for fun because he’s always loved dishing up plates. He asked out his wife with a piece of gum, and they’ve lived in fifteen different states. This person is someone I love and know: Randy’s my grandpa, and he’s my hero. |
Anna Martin, a senior at Regina High School, says that,"This sonnet was meant to highlight some of my favorite stories about my grandpa's life. He has faced many obstacles but has always maintained his kindness, penchant for practical jokes, and his sincere compassion. I love him very much and this poem is a tribute to him."
The editors really felt that this poem's rhyme scheme worked well and they also enjoyed how it relayed the happy memories of her grandfather. They were impressed with how much information Anna packed into this sonnet.
