Plastic slide on unkempt lawn,
Missing children: playing
In the tall grass.
Empty boxcar, insolvent
Empire: Atlantis amid rust
And silence.
Blue ribbon babe: 1871.5 lbs.
Largest jack-o’-lantern
This year.
Burnt rubber dreams on
Bleached interstate: the track of
A highway preacher.
Elbow perched on sill of
Eighteen wheeler: old soldier tilting
Cigarette with smile.
Empty ammo can
From Caesar Creek: relic of
1st Forever War.
3
Cowboy at Waffle House
Counter, lost inside cup of Joe:
Ten thousand miles deep.
Black man staggering between
Cars: rattling cup of coins--
Waiting for change.
Sunshower in afternoon:
So sang an empty blessing
From above.
