West Coast Wishing - Hunter Bishop

I want the sand in my hair,
the salty breeze,
and an ocean that never sleeps,
swaying its hips forever.

I want the dry desert heat,
the whining cicadas,
and the vast nothing like a canvas
that only the toughest life can paint.

I want the days that drizzle by,
the soft patters in the night,
and the rivers that run down the sidewalks,
carrying secrets and dreams.

Hunter Bishop stated, "These poems are thoughts that keep me up at night, thoughts I don't ever think I'll resolve. Putting them on paper gives me a chance to acknowledge that they exist, and helps me to stay above them when my head gets flooded."

Hunter is in 11th grade at Houghton High School. The editors felt that this poem was very descriptive throughout. They also felt that the wish to go to the West Coast beaches is something everyone in the Midwest feels. Hunter also wrote the poems "Aging Population" and "Coffee."
