Golden Lies
By: Ariel Clark
I watched as the serpent puffed up in rage,
Sat still and began to return its gaze.
It hissed and it shrieked a blood curling sound,
Deafening all of those who were around.
It threatened all those who dared to approach,
Scaring away even the bravest cockroach.
The emerald eyes of the shining beast glared,
As if challenging poor fools with a dare.
My feet began walking as if on their own,
The creature balked as if I’d just flown.
Its confusion didn’t last and its scales didn’t smooth,
Yet I couldn’t stop my feet from wanting to move.
The forked tongue jutted out just an inch,
Away from my face which had made me flinch.
Inviting itself in the snake punctured flesh,
Making my skin glisten with golden relish.
Occasionally now I may find myself scared,
To notice I’ve grown fangs or ate all those who’re near.
But the curse has brought such riches and delights,
What’s wrong with being a serpent for just one more night?

Writer's Statement: I love rhyming and find poetry to be a fun way to express ideals in a sense that normal language can't quite grasp. I've done poetry for years as a coping mechanism and adore rhyming particularly, so be prepared for that.
