Rain
By: Sophia Lewis
I can hear it on the roof,
beckoning me from my bed,
but the thunder makes me want to hide
here forever.
If I stay in my refuge, I will never know if the rain was a sign.
A sign of sadness and despair.
A sign of growth and better things to come.
But if I leave, I will get wet.
Like a soggy dog.
Like the leaves of the palmito
tree in the Amazon.
Maybe if I find an umbrella, the rain won’t be so bad.
Maybe I can find someone to walk with me,
to distract me from the water.
Or maybe I can learn
to dance in the rain.
Maybe I can accept it,
and it can embrace me as a friend.
Rain grows flowers
after all.
Maybe it can wash me
clean.
My regrets will slide into the mud,
my fears will be washed down the drain.
My stress will be scrubbed away,
my mistakes will be rinsed off.
My mind automatically goes to the bad,
making me want to hide from it.
But if I explore it, maybe I’ll find that it isn’t that bad.
That it’s just what you make of it.
beckoning me from my bed,
but the thunder makes me want to hide
here forever.
If I stay in my refuge, I will never know if the rain was a sign.
A sign of sadness and despair.
A sign of growth and better things to come.
But if I leave, I will get wet.
Like a soggy dog.
Like the leaves of the palmito
tree in the Amazon.
Maybe if I find an umbrella, the rain won’t be so bad.
Maybe I can find someone to walk with me,
to distract me from the water.
Or maybe I can learn
to dance in the rain.
Maybe I can accept it,
and it can embrace me as a friend.
Rain grows flowers
after all.
Maybe it can wash me
clean.
My regrets will slide into the mud,
my fears will be washed down the drain.
My stress will be scrubbed away,
my mistakes will be rinsed off.
My mind automatically goes to the bad,
making me want to hide from it.
But if I explore it, maybe I’ll find that it isn’t that bad.
That it’s just what you make of it.
Writer's Statement: I am a person who tends to have low expectations and believe the worst. In this poem, I explored some of the positives that stem from something that I typically see as negative--rain.
