Adelie
By: Shiloh Burger
Black and white formal
A wandering bachelor
Warm in the fluff and finery
Across the cold, slick floor,
I saw you in your black satin shift
How does one begin to break the ice in the dazzling fray?
You Dive
Deep into the icy maze of conversation
Searching for a connection
A silvery fishy thread of communication
So imagine my delight when you take my hand
And we brave the perils of the sea
Arm in arm, swimming as one; united
We’re spinning, flying, gliding as we dance
Flowing and fighting the current of the floor
The music, a clamor of trumpets and voices
We slipped away to the beach.
Stumbling over rocks away from the crowd
I showed you a stone banded with gold
You smiled
Teeth like fresh powder
Years as partners and happy lovers
A house made of stone
To help us brave the arctic cold
A wandering bachelor
Warm in the fluff and finery
Across the cold, slick floor,
I saw you in your black satin shift
How does one begin to break the ice in the dazzling fray?
You Dive
Deep into the icy maze of conversation
Searching for a connection
A silvery fishy thread of communication
So imagine my delight when you take my hand
And we brave the perils of the sea
Arm in arm, swimming as one; united
We’re spinning, flying, gliding as we dance
Flowing and fighting the current of the floor
The music, a clamor of trumpets and voices
We slipped away to the beach.
Stumbling over rocks away from the crowd
I showed you a stone banded with gold
You smiled
Teeth like fresh powder
Years as partners and happy lovers
A house made of stone
To help us brave the arctic cold
Writer's Statement: All of the works in my submission are based on birds and their many influences in our daily life, some obvious and others hidden. Adelie is the personification of the Adelie penguins and their behavior similar to humans. Birds have always been a beautiful source of information for me, and I loved to showcase them in these poems.
