him or Him?
By: Melina Armentrout
My heart belongs within ethereal halls,
Thirst and hunger satisfied by their skyscraper walls.
I confide in drops of altered water,
Although you believe I have more than one savior,
You have tugged on my veil before.
But this time you have slain it with your sword,
I bestow the sword to Him,
And ask how to fix the damage from your vengeful whim,
He provides answers while you show an ultimatum,
Show me two doors and I will walk towards the one playing the hymn I always hum.
You patronize me as I throw myself deeper into the white sky,
Because you don’t know that I choose Him over your sapphire eyes.
Writer's Statement: This poem is inspired by an argument between my late grandma and grandpa that people in my family still talk about. My grandma Bonnie was very religious and my grandpa wasn't. He kept interfering with her faith and one day the last time they ever argued over it she said, "Don't make me choose between my husband and my faith because I know what I'll choose." And I think that story is very powerful and deserved to be told again.
