Ode to a Spleen
By: Claire Cooper
I think that I have never seen
a poem lovely as a spleen.
A person with a half-spleen’s blessed,
but, I think, a whole spleen’s best.
A spleen that filters blood all day
and throws old RBCs away.
The LUQ, you’ll find it there.
If not a doctor, you don’t care,
but if you value health, not pain,
from criticizing spleens, refrain.
I write these poems by routine,
but only God can make a spleen.
a poem lovely as a spleen.
A person with a half-spleen’s blessed,
but, I think, a whole spleen’s best.
A spleen that filters blood all day
and throws old RBCs away.
The LUQ, you’ll find it there.
If not a doctor, you don’t care,
but if you value health, not pain,
from criticizing spleens, refrain.
I write these poems by routine,
but only God can make a spleen.
Writer's Statement: I like to write about all sorts of things, like my own experiences, stories I have heard, or things I am learning. I often start writing a poem with no clear idea of the direction it will take; I discover each part as I go.
