selenophilia
By: Zoe Chu

selenophilia. noun.
“love for the moon; resonance
for the moon
the moon has many phases, faces,
he is cold, but not brutal, elegant,
both always seen and
never seen. and he can
see all with not a
single blink
i envy him.
selenophilia. i
wish i had loved the moon instead
of her
but i feel, deep, deep
deep.
and i wish i could be cold
for once in my life
say no
for once in my life
and i resonate with his many faces,
my faces of doubt
and then fiery spirit
then fear and doubt
yet, again.
and i wish,
oh, oh i wish
i could see all like he could,
perch in the sky and just see
how naive
i had been.
oh.
selenophilia. and now i wish
i could kiss the moon
kiss him to prove
that i still love men,
kiss him to rid my lips of hers
kiss him to save me from
my sins.

Writer's Statement: The moon, being such a pure being, contrasts with the sin that the narrator feels in this poem, and I aimed to capture complete desperation through that- desperation to cleanse oneself, desperation to the point of yearning to love a rock in the sky instead.
