little flame
By: Chanel Cao
When darkness crosses the path of light
It leaves sparks, embers bound to ignite Gentle breeze carries the birth of life Over mountains and rivers tainted with strife It settles in forest deep of green Vulnerable, helpless to creatures unseen It trips and stumbles into a house of hives Stinging bed of a thousand lies Blindly falls into river near Tormented and fed by a thousand tears Sputtering, it crawls ‘neath moon’s steady rise Encounters creatures, monsters with mirrors for eyes At last, finds peace in the dark of a cave Shivering, huddling, hoping to be saved Little flame flickers and threatens to die Unknownst if it’ll live to another sun high Little flame slowly closes its eyes And sees the world for one last time Whether it lives or whether it dies, Just know its fire once burned bright |
Writer's Statement: My inspiration for my poetry is often a combination of my own experiences and experiences I imagine have happened to other people that I could easily see myself in. Often, my poems are rather serendipitous and finished within a small time frame, and I find that I use a lot of rhyme to express myself. There is a certain intriguing aesthetic feeling I aim for in my poems, and I hope that is enjoyed by you. Thank you.
